BERA, ABR, ASSR & ECochG Tests – Advanced Hearing Centre in hyderabad

1. BERA Test (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)

What is BERA?
BERA is a non-invasive test that records how the brainstem responds to sound. It is especially useful for assessing hearing in infants, young children, or individuals who can’t provide reliable responses during standard hearing tests.

Why is BERA done?

  • To detect hearing loss in newborns and infants

  • Diagnose auditory nerve and brainstem disorders

  • Evaluate suspected cases of auditory neuropathy

How it works:
Electrodes are placed on the head to record electrical responses from the brainstem after playing sounds through earphones.

Duration: 30–60 minutes | Painless & Safe

2. ABR Test (Auditory Brainstem Response)

ABR vs. BERA:
ABR is the same test as BERA – both measure the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to sound.

Note: The terms ABR and BERA are often used interchangeably.

Ideal for:

  • Newborn hearing screening

  • Evaluating retrocochlear pathology (like acoustic neuroma)

  • Diagnosing hearing thresholds in non-cooperative patients

3. ASSR Test (Auditory Steady-State Response)

What is ASSR?
ASSR is a modern, objective test to estimate hearing sensitivity for different frequencies. Unlike BERA/ABR, it provides frequency-specific thresholds and is especially useful for fitting hearing aids in infants and young children.

Key Features:

  • Tests multiple frequencies in both ears simultaneously

  • Provides detailed audiogram-like data

  • Excellent for newborn and pediatric hearing assessments

4. ECochG Test (Electrocochleography)

What is ECochG?
Electrocochleography measures the electrical potentials generated in the inner ear (cochlea) and auditory nerve in response to sound. It is primarily used to diagnose inner ear disorders.

Recommended for Diagnosing:

  • Ménière’s Disease

  • Endolymphatic hydrops

  • Auditory neuropathy

  • Suspected cochlear damage

How it’s performed:
Electrodes are placed in the ear canal or on the eardrum while sounds are played. The procedure is safe, quick, and minimally uncomfortable.
